The breed was developed in Great Britain around the 13th century from dogs with Molossian ancestors, brought to Britain by Phoenician traders. The specific characteristics of the bred are: very strong, short, undershot jaws, laid back nose, compact body, short, stocky legs, and a very high pain threshold. These dogs are strong and courageous, but gentle with children and obedient with the master. Unfortunately there are people who buy a dog not realizing a great responsibility of such ownership.
