This breed is ungainly in proportions, but very powerful and tenacious. The head of these dogs is a very complex mechanism, designed to perform one function – grasping. According to the standard, the head of this breed should be the larger the better. The largeness of the head comes not only from the skull, but also from the thickness of the cheeks, which are prominent beyond the eyes. The jaws get their power from here. The head should be massive also because the weight of the dog is concentrated closer to the bull.

The direct ancestry of this breed is still not clear. What most breed historians do agree is the origin of the breed’s name. Bulldogs received their name due to the fact that they were used to guard, control and bait bulls. Males of the breed weigh 53-55 pounds; females’ weight ranges from 49 to 51 pounds. Males grow to a height of 12-15 inches. There is no concrete height for females but they are normally shorter than males. An average litter size in the breed is 4-5 puppies.
